Camellia japonica ist von Natur aus ein großer Strauch oder kleiner Baum mit unterschiedlicher Größe, Wachstumsrate und Wuchs. Hundert Jahre alte Pflanzen in Kalifornien könnten bei gleicher Ausbreitung eine Höhe von bis zu 20 Fuß erreichen. Gärtner können jedoch in Betracht ziehen, dass C. japonica Sträucher mit einer Höhe und Breite von 6 bis 12 Fuß bildet.
